What's Up with Your Clean Up, Dominion?

Whereas power plants are the largest stationary sources of air pollution in Massachusetts and the nation;

Whereas concerns about the health and safety of power plant workers, Salem residents and neighboring communities have captured the headlines for years;

Whereas comprehensive efforts to reduce all pollutants of concern from the Salem Harbor Station and other highly polluting power plants in Massachusetts was launched more than 10 years ago;

Whereas precedent-setting pollution standards were finalized in 2001 requiring deep cuts in soot-forming sulfur dioxide, smog-forming nitrogen oxides, heat-trapping carbon dioxide, and the neurotoxin mercury from the "Filthy Five" most polluting power plants in Massachusetts;

Whereas carbon dioxide emissions from power plants in a multi-state region from Maine to Maryland have been capped to broadly reduce global warming pollution through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI);

Whereas Dominion, the current owner of the Salem Harbor Station, negotiated a new agreement in 2005 that gives them additional time to meet these pollution requirements;

Whereas the surrounding community has been subject to the insults of air pollution, groundwater pollution, and drinking water pollution since the plant was built over 50 years ago;

THEREFORE, the undersigned urge Dominion to publicly disclose:

How they will meet the multi-pollutant standards, including both "Filthy Five" and RGGI regulations in 2008 and 2009;

How they will better protect worker safety;

Where the fly ash is being deposited.
